Child Labour

December 5th, 2008

Child labour in India is a serious problem, with many children under the age of 14 working in carpet making factories, glass blowing units and making fireworks with bare little hands. According to statistics given by Indian government there are 20 million child labourers in the country while other agencies claim the figure is closer to 50 million.

The condition of child labourers in India is desperate. They work for eight hours at a stretch with only small breaks for their meals. Most of the child labourers are under-nourished. They sleep at the workplace, which is very bad for their health and development. The reason for child labour is that poverty ridden rural families perceive their chidren as an income generating resource to supplement family income. Parents neglect their children’s education to meet the growing needs of their younger siblings.
